Earning Potential of a Pharmacy Technician | Healthcare Careers | NEIH

Updated: Mar 19

What to Expect from a Career as a Pharmacy Technician and How to Become One

Pharmacy Technicians can be a great career path to get into. What separates this position from many other positions in healthcare is the work environment and stress level. For example, Pharmacy Technicians typically work in drug store pharmacies and may have limited patient interactions. You will not find this workforce in an emergency room dealing with those high-stress situations. This position is great for those that have the drive to help people but do not wish to work in an emergency room setting. To find employment as a Pharmacy Technician most positions require a non-degree post-secondary award, or certification offered through trade school (vocational program). With most programs, you can go from the classroom to a paying job in as little as 3-4 months.

Income Potential as a Pharmacy Technician

The Bureau Of Labor Statistics states that the national income average for Pharmacy Technicians is estimated at around $30,000 with an hourly rate of $15.72. Pharmacy Technician is a position with an expected growth of 7% creating over 30,000 new jobs from 2018 -2028. Data regarding the income for Pramacy Technicians do vary from state to state. For example, top Pharmacy Technicians earners in New Jersey can earn upwards of $48,000 annually. While top Pharmacy Technicians income earners in West Virginia earn in the ballpark of $38,000. Many factors need to be considered when researching the income for any position. These factors include experience, areas of employment (rural or in city centers) and industries of employment. For example, Pharmacy Technicians in a hospital setting or surgical setting earn more than those in drug stores.

Advancement Opportunities for Pharmacy Technicians

One of the great things about creating a career through a trade school or vocational program is that you have freedom of growth and mobility. The college route is great for those that know exactly what they want to do and for those that have the luxury of time. The trade route is for those that want to spend a shorter amount of time in school, and spend less on education. Becoming a Pharmacy Technician can shorten the time and money you spend in school and put yourself into the workforce quicker. Pharmacy Technicians can easily enroll in one of New Educares many career advancement programs to certify them in other aspects of healthcare. Some of our career advancement programs are Patient Care Technician, Clinical Medical Assistant, Phlebotomy and EKG Technician, and Administrative Medical Assistant.
