Patient Care Section Description

This comprehensive course is designed to prepare the student to provide direct care and services to clients throughout the life span under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. Special emphasis is placed on the care of older clients focusing on their physical, social, emotional, spiritual, and cultural needs. This includes developing skills in procedures, communication, and observation, charting and reporting. The student will be made aware of how State and Federal laws as well as policies and procedures of the institution govern the practice of the nursing assistant. Patient Care skills include taking care of the patient and performing designated duties of specific skills for assisting patient and provide a rehabilitation environment. Some example of patient care skills may include transfer techniques, gait techniques, assisting in wound care management, feeding, taking vital signs, assisting with prosthesis and orthosis devices, perineal care for male and female, wheelchair management, assisting in using bed pans, safety, infection control, anatomy & physiology, nutrition, emergency situations, positioning, and death & dying.

EKG Section Description

The program prepares the candidate as an EKG Technician responsible for performing diagnostic tests to access the heart rhythm and rate in patients. EKG’s are also performed before and after operations, during physicals, examinations of patients over 40, for patients with a history of heart disease, when patients are experiencing chest pains and when the Doctor deems it necessary. The well trained EKG technician is an integral part of the management of patients with heart disease. The EKG Technician may also clean equipment, maintain and process data reports.


Phlebotomy Section Description

This course provides phlebotomy instruction to the student with a working knowledge of collecting blood while emphasizing on patient safety, quality assurance, universal, standard precautions and legal issues and complications. Techniques taught during this course are Evacuated tube method, Syringe method, Winged infusion set, Capillary blood collection, Glucose testing, Bleeding time, Blood smear & Urinalysis. This program prepares learners to act as entry level Phlebotomists. The Phlebotomist is a member of the health care team who collects and processes lab specimens, educates patients in specimen collection procedures, and performs waived laboratory tests. Phlebotomists may also have responsibilities for information processing, training, and quality control monitoring. Most Phlebotomists work in hospital or clinic labs, blood centers, nursing homes, insurance companies, research facilities, or public health.

We believe that a Patient Care Technician is a valuable member of the health care team. Under the direction of the health professional, the Patient Care Technician provides holistic, empathetic care to the client, family and
community.  The evolution from student to Patient Care Technician professional provides an opportunity to become a contributing member of society while reaching personal and professional goals. The Patient Care Technician has an important role of performing EKG’s, Phlebotomy and Nursing Skills of Patient Care within the accepted scope of practice. Patient Care Techncians is not limited to a hospital setting,they may also work in doctors’ offices, medical clinics, nursing homes, home health. The educational environment of the Patient Care Technician Program at NEIH considers individual differences which affect learning ability, and provides motivation to continue to learn and adapt to the changes in a healthcare setting. The faculty believes an individual’s ability to learn is based on past experiences and personal potential, which permits learning to occur at different rates and levels. Learning takes place most readily when material is covered in a logical sequence and progresses in difficulty from simple to complex. Under the guidance of the faculty, the student should assume responsibility for much of their own learning. The faculty believes that Patient Care Technician education should reflect the student’s development of skills and theoretical knowledge essential for correctly performing EKG’s, collecting blood specimens, properly transporting specimens to the laboratory and performing patient care skills. 

Certificate of Completion

Upon successful completion of this course, students will receive a certificate of completion and will be eligible for National Certification exam.

The certification exam is a two part exam which tests the student on clinical skills and knowledge based multiple choice exam.
